This piece of mine won the Status Ceramics Prize at the Artisan Tile Northwest Annual Show and Sale on October 4th, 2013. Its titled Elwha: Free at Last (9″x16″) and was inspired by the removal of two dams on the Elwha River in Olympic National Park.
The removal of the dams is unprecedented and I have been quite taken with it. This summer, my family and I hiked through Lake Aldwell, one of 2 drained lakes. We could see marks left in the sand where the water drained out. And then of course, there was the river rushing through as it was always meant to do. You can read more about river and habitat restoration on the Olympic National Park website: http://www.nps.gov/olym/index.htm
