My handmade tile group, Artisan Tile Northwest, recently held its annual fall show and sale. Along with it being my first experience to participate it was also the first time held at the Center for Urban Horticulture. The CUH was a wonderful venue for the Botanical themed show providing a lovely garden setting and lots of natural light. Attendance was high and the tile making demos were a huge success. I was also thrilled when my entry, “Tall Grass” won the Tile Heritage Prize in the juried show. It was selected by Seattle artist, George Rodrigues, who is represented at Foster White Gallery. It was an honor to receive the prize from Tile Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the research and preservation of ceramic surfaces in the United States.

This is the 46th annual convention drawing ceramic artists from far and near. Seattle and the surrounding region are abuzz with the many ceramic shows being presented for the conference. As a member of Artisan Tile North West, I’m fortunate to be taking part in one of those shows at the Tashiro Kaplan Gallery near Pioneer Square. The show features 35 tile artists with a wide variety of themes and styles. The show will be open from 12 to 5, March 27 to the 31st. NCECA offers a unique opportunity to view some amazing ceramic art. Check out the conference website for more information: http://nceca.net/static/conference_home.php.

January 2012: I recently attended my third Heaven on Earth workshop in Todos Santos, BCS with Donna Billick. This year’s project was a “community build” featuring a 12 foot Aztec Calendar made from a combination of handmade ceramic pieces, concrete and mosaics. The final results were installed outdoors in the town’s center. I continue to be amazed at how versatile concrete can be. The center piece of the calendar is a sun face about 18 inches in diameter. First we molded the face with ceramic clay. Then polyurethane was poured over the whole thing to create a mold. A plaster mother mold was also made which supports the polyurethane once it is filled with concrete. Then the face was cast in the polyurethane mold with tinted concrete.
